Photo of the bow of the Hunley. If
you look in the background you can see an old floating drydock. It appears that
the Hunley is off of the barge and sitting on the pier. If you look between the
numbers 4 & 5 on the lifting sling you can see the forward conning tower.
Just behind the 4 you can see the yellow foam plug they used to seal the hole in
the conning tower. Just forward of the diving plane you can see a fixed edge
that they believe was used to prevent anything from getting tangled into the
diving plane. |

Picture of the Hunley still on the
barge. They lifted her off of the barge at Pier "J" on the Old Navy
Base. If you look in the background you can see some of the boats that followed
her up the Cooper River. If you look under the word bow on the lifting sling
there is a better view of the plug that they put in the conning tower. You can
also see the diving planes appear to be in a slight rise position. |

Close-up of the bow with the
Hunley still on the barge. You can clearly see both access hatches, the
angle on the diving planes as well as the angle which the boat was lying
on the floor for 136 years and the yellow foam bags they used to maintain
the ships position. You can also see the sprinkler system that they rigged
to keep the boat wet while bringing her in. |

This picture shows the Hunley
being pushed into the storage building that it will be for several years.
This picture probably gives the best overall appearance of the boat. You can
clearly see both conning towers, the plug in the forward tower, the angle on
the diving planes and boat, and the "anti-fouling tab"(?) forward
of the diving plane. |
