Subject: Submarine History For you submarine history buffs, I have compiled a series of questions spanning the very early timeframe, pre World War II and the Cold War eras for submarines. I have posted some of this information on other boards and have received many responses. I have most of the answers to these questions, but there are several I need to complete. If you want to post your responses, I will in a couple of weeks give the correct answers for the questions posted. I prefer to do this in several stages, three sections to be exact as the posts can get very long. For clarification purposes, when referring to the following questions the definition of “service” during specific timeframes, eg Pre Word War II (pre wartime, prior to Dec ‘41), World War II (wartime, Dec ’41 to Aug ‘45), Post World War II (post wartime, after Aug ‘45) means that the submarine served during a period and individual service could be for more than one period. Additionally, “service” is defined as the time from first commissioning date to final Naval Vessel Register strike date, or loss, as applicable. Thus, submarines that are in current service are not included. The following is the initial set of questions, General Information. Hope you enjoy ..... General Information: What was the world’s first submarine? What was the world’s first practical submarine? What was the first military submarine? What was the first submarine used in combat? What was the US Navy’s’ first submarine? What was the US Navy’s second submarine? What was the US Navy’s first commissioned submarine? What US Navy submarine has the record for the most dives and surfaces? What US Navy submarine has the most decorated crew for one specific action? What is the most decorated US Navy submarine and vessel in US Naval history? What US Navy submarine hull has more than one name? How many US Navy submarines were built with the same name, four hulls? What names? How many US Navy submarines were built with the same name, three hulls? What names? What is the name of the engine powered submarine (warship) with the longest service duration? How long? What is the name of the engine powered submarine (non-warship) with the longest service duration? How long? What is the name of the engine powered submarine with the shortest (casualty) service duration? How long? What is the name of the engine powered submarine with the shortest (non-casualty) service duration? How long? What is the name of the nuclear powered submarine (warship) with the longest service duration? How long? What is the name of the nuclear powered submarine (non-warship) with the longest service duration? How long? What is the name of the nuclear powered submarine with the shortest (casualty) service duration? How long? What is the name of the nuclear powered submarine with the shortest (non-casualty) service duration? How long?

Senior Crew Posts: 179 Location: carlsbad, CA | Subject: RE: Submarine History Wow! That's a lot of remote but detailed history. I have a question about the Dolphin, 555. Since one of her first assignments was to fire torpedoes at extreme depth to ensure that it could be done and that they would work, doesn't that make the Dolphin a warship? I realize that, later, her Torpedo Tube was removed, after the questions were answered in the affirmative, so they could build a huge spherical bow which was used to develop sonar systems. Still, she did fire some torpedoes.

Subject: RE: Submarine History Doug - Interesting question. Although the Dolphin was designed as a deep-diving, research and development platform, it did indeed launch a torpedo at the deepest depth that one has ever been fired (US limited). My personal opinion is that the Dolphin did launch torpedoes, but in actuality did not have the weapons fire control capability that a "normal" warship would have installed. Her specialized instrumentation was for research and development for deep dive testing and was limited by this function. But, others may have a different opinion.
