MITCHELL, Roland Willis, passed away on Tuesday, February 28, 2017. Roland was born on September 6, 1923 and was a resident of Queensbury, New York at the time of his passing. He is a WWII Veteran he proudly served our Country as a Naval Petty Officer in the capacity of Gunners Mate 2nd class on the submarine USS Scabberfish from 1944 until 1946. He was married to Shirley. Calling hours will take place Monday March 6 from 10 a.m. to noon at Baker Funeral Home 11 Lafayette St. Queensbury NY 12804.A funeral service will follow at noon at the funeral home with the Rev. Patti Girard officiating.Interment with military honors will follow at Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery 200 Duell Rd. Schuylerville, NY. BROWN, Gary Frederick, MCPO, USN, Ret., 67, passed from this life Wed., February 22, 2017 in Charleston, SC. Gary was born January 9,1950 in Kellog, ID, son of the late Ottis Frederick Brown and the late Ona Irene LeBow Brown. Gary grew up in Albuquerque and was a 1968 graduate of Sandia High. Gary joined the Navy in 1971, eventually serving as a Missile Technician Master Chief aboard US Navy submarines. He retired in 2001 after proudly serving for 30 years. A service with Military Honors was held in Charleston, SC on February 24, 2017. CARTER, Leo Allen, Jr., 93, of Cocoa Beach, FL, February 26, 2017. Leo, AKA Tom/Doc, was born on October 13, 1923 in Grand Ledge, MI, and is the son of Leo and Edna. He served in the Navy during and after WWII, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer; HMC(SS). During WWII, he served on the USS Archer-Fish (COB), USS Sperry (CSD-102) and USS Silversides (CSD-102), [Bushnell, Gilmore, Chivo (COB), Runner, Ronquil, Baya (COB), Spinax]. Among the many awards he received, the Submarine Combat Insignia with star was treasured. After retiring from the Navy, he earned a Master's Degree to assist disabled and physically challenged persons. He was named Chair, Michigan Governor's Committee on Employment of Persons with Disabilities and served on the President's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped. As a DAV Chapter 123 Service Officer, he assisted veterans and families seeking benefits. The USSVI Snug Harbor Base Chapter, Brevard Veterans Council, VFW are a few of the military organizations where he was active, as well as many community organizations. He is survived in death by his loving wife of over 37 years, Mary Ann, and his children, Leo Allen Carter, Jr., Joann Shump-Phillips (mother Dolores), Julie, Fred and Alan (mother Dorothy), stepson Dan (mother Mary Ann), 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and his sister Gloria. His brothers, William, Richard and Robert preceded him in death. A special thank you goes to Elsa for years of PT that helped Leo stay active and to CNAs Kay and Jo for their loving care. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Veterans Memorial Center, 400 S. Sykes Creek Pkwy Merritt Island FL on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 5 p.m. Donations may be to DAV Chapter 123, 400 S. HARNER Charles F., 81, of Vienna, VA, passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at home. Beloved husband of the late Marjorie Harner; devoted father of Debra Lowe, Cheryl Hyland, and Kimberly Haggerty; brother of Evelyn McConathy. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Charles J. Hyland, Melissa Lowe, Timothy Haggerty, and Matthew Hyland. Charles served in the United States Navy for 25 years, retiring as a Submarine Commander. He was an active member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Singing in America, Inc. Relatives and friends are invited to Charles' Life Celebration at Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church, 1301 Wolf Trap Rd., Vienna, VA on Saturday, March 11 from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at a later date.
