Morton Botshon, age 93, of Sarasota, FL., passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. Morton was born January 13,1932 in Queens, NY to Samuel and Rose Botshon. Morton grew up in Rockaway Beach, NY and began his fast-tracked Naval career path at only 22 years old. After completing his Electrical Engineering degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (where he was a member of two engineering honor societies: Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi), he chose to pursue a career in the Navy for the next 21 years. After completing Submarine School in 1957 he married Doris Ginsburg and they started a family soon after. In 1962 he went to the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA. where he received his Masters degree in Electrical Engineering. He then went on to Nuclear Power School in 1963. Morton, Doris and their 3 children lived the typical Navy life - relocating the family to many Naval stations on both US coasts as well as Hawaii, with Morton sometimes spending months at sea on various submarines. During his naval career, Morton experienced the evolution of the modern submarine service. His first submarine was the USS Diablo, a WW2 diesel submarine. And later, he oversaw the construction of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, which included their sea trials. He was a plank owner of the USS Ulysses S. Grant, a member of the original crew of this newly commissioned ballistic missile submarine. His last submarine was the USS Mariano G. Vallejo, also a plank owner of this ballistic missile submarine where he served as the Executive Officer on the Gold Crew. At the age of 42, Morton chose to retire from the Navy with the rank of Commander. After his retirement, the family moved to Philadelphia where he pursued a career in the commercial nuclear power industry. Upon retiring from his second career of twenty years, Morton and Doris moved to the Pocono mountains in Pennsylvania where their love of nature, the outdoors, and solitude of the rural countryside befit them. When Morton wasn't busy building stone walls, chopping wood, fishing and collecting stamps and coins, they travelled extensively visiting 6 continents. When Morton turned 80, he and Doris moved to Sarasota, FL. where they wanted the amenities and culture that Sarasota offered, as well as the beautiful water views of Sarasota Bay. It was here in Sarasota they would spend the next 13 years together, continuing to enjoy their love of opera and orchestra, travelling, enjoying time with their children and 5 lovely grandchildren, and taking advantage of all that Southwest Florida had to offer. On June 23rd, Morton and Doris celebrated 68 years of a beautiful and full life together. And then in the early morning of the 24th, they did part, peacefully and by each other's side. Morton is survived by his wife of 68 years, Doris Botshon of Sarasota FL.; his son Gregory Botshon (Sheryl) of Boynton Beach, FL.; his daughter Bethany Teitelbaum (Richard) of Essex, NY.; his son Peter Botshon (Rebecca) of Springboro, OH., and 4 grandchildren: Eric Botshon (Janessa), Stephanie Okin (Zach), Skylar Botshon and Taylor Botshon. Richard Allen McCammon, 78, of Russellville, Arkansas, passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at Springhill Baptist Medical Center in North Little Rock. Richard was born on September 28, 1946, in South Bend, Indiana, to William McCammon Sr. and Myrtle Elaine Petree McCammon. He was the third of four boys and graduated from Niles High School in Niles, Michigan, in 1965. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served proudly as an electrician's mate aboard aircraft carriers, destroyers, and diesel submarines. He also served as an instructor at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in North Chicago. After 21 years of faithful service, Richard retired from the Navy in 1986 with the rank of Chief Petty Officer and moved to Russellville with his wife, Patricia. He continued his career as an electrician, working at ConAgra and later International Paper until his retirement. Richard was known affectionately by many names. "Chief" honored his military service, while "Grumpy" came from a restaurant joke that stuck – and reflected his playful sense of humor. He was quick with a clever remark, always joking around, and loved bringing smiles to others. Around town, he was lovingly referred to as the "M&M man" or the "Candy man" for his habit of handing out M&Ms to children and dog treats to any furry friends he met along his walks. He was a longtime member of the Disabled American Veterans and enjoyed visits to Branson to see the Presley's Country Jubilee and going to the movies. But above all, he cherished time with his family. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 53 years, Patricia Jean Horning McCammon; his brother, Chuck McCammon; and his son, Thomas McCammon. He is survived by his daughter, Michelle McCammon of Russellville; his son, Robert McCammon of Russellville; and his grandchildren: Ashley, Kelsey, Alannah, Haley, JJ, Austin, and Zack. He also leaves behind his brothers, William McCammon (Beverly) and Larry McCammon (Mary), and sister-in-law, Mary Jo McCammon. | ||
