At random: Long considered a versatile and deadly instrument of war, the submarine has broadened her capabilities with the adoption of nuclear power. Today the submarine serves as a ballistic missile platform, early warning station, killer of surface and underwater vessels, scout, coastal raider troop transport, supply ship, mine layer, and seaplane tender.

The above link goes to the USSVI (United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.) Facebook page where their members who have gone on “Eternal Patrol” are noted.

I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

MORDINE .. .. .. Glenn Mordine passed away peacefully on the evening of August 26, 2025, in Anchorage, AK.
Born July 25, 1930, in Hayward, California, Glenn enlisted in the Navy at age 17 on the last day of WWII against Japan. He served two years in the submarine service on the USS Bugara. In 1950 he joined the Marine Corps, serving six campaigns with the 1st Marine Division in Korea including the Inchon Landing and the epic Chosin Reservoir campaign. After his first tour in Korea, Glenn volunteered for the newly formed first Amphibious Reconnaissance Company operating off submarines; he earned a meritorious promotion to Lieutenant in his second year of service. After retiring with the rank of Major, Glenn, a high school dropout, earned a BA and MA in Education.
The majority of his career in education was dedicated to serving the Yupik children of western Alaska; "It wasn't a job," he would say, "but rather service." He lived in five villages and Bethel. Known by some as Mr. Fixit, his many positions included teacher, principal, director of special education, director of programs, and principal of Bethel High School; he was especially proud of helping villages transition from state to locally operated schools.
With no real mentor in his life, Glenn felt his character formation was a result of his faith and his years in Marine Corps. He believed it was important to give back to country, community and church: he served as president of the Bethel Lion's Club and Chief of Staff of the Alaskan Veterans of Foreign Wars. At his Catholic church, he served on the pastoral council and debt reduction committee.
Glenn was preceded in death by his younger brother Merwin Mordine. He is survived by his wife Merlita, four children and four grandchildren. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to St Andrews of Eagle River or Doctors Without Borders.

CHILCOTT .. .. .. David Richard Chilcott, 73, passed away at his home on Friday, December 2, 2022, in Sheridan, WY with his loving wife by his side.
After his service with the US Navy as a submarine helmsman, he settled in CT. In 1992, he met Brenda Underwood. A couple years later, his father, Milton Chilcott, passed away and Dave decided it was time to return to Sheridan WY. In February of 1995, he packed up his wife and cat and drove 2100 miles for the start of a new adventure. Everyone we ran into said to him “haven’t seen you in a while” (it had been 20 years), or to Brenda would say “have I got a story for you” and Dave also would say “I don’t know if I told you this one”…. He was quite the character in the ’70s and 80s.
Dave was an avid golfer. He would play golf all weekend long as a kid and most weekends as an adult. His effortless swing would make the ball sail down the fairway. He always joked that if he could do that with a Kmart club, he could be a pro with “real clubs”.
Dave’s other passion was photography. With almost 50 years of photography, hundreds of brides, and 1000’s pictures, Dave’s passion for photography was known throughout the midwest. He earned many awards for his photos in his earlier years when he worked with his father in the newspaper business. That passion carried on until the very last engagement session he took in September 2022. Dave will always be remembered for his humor. Whether good or bad (mostly bad) jokes, he always left everyone with a laugh and usually shaking their heads at him.

COLE .. .. .. This world lost a kind, generous and loving soul when Gary Allen Cole passed away on October 27, 2025, after bravely fighting a recurring battle with throat cancer. He is survived by his loving wife, Bridget, beloved sister, Sherry and several nieces and nephews.
Gary was born in Oceanside, CA on July 17, 1958. He lived his early life in Napa, CA, Manitou Springs, CO, Manton, MI and Hastings, MN, where he graduated from high school in 1976. From there he followed in the footsteps of his Dad and joined the Navy and volunteered to serve on submarines, which became his life’s passion. He served with honor and distinction and ascended to rank of Chief Petty Officer and was a Storekeeper on subs while at sea, while serving shore duty, he did stints in the Seabees in Kansas City, MO and taught as an instructor at NAS Meridian where he trained new storekeepers to serve on submarines around the world. Gary was stationed many places over his twenty-two-year career in the Navy, such as Groton, CT, Kings Bay, GA, Meridian MS and Bremerton, WA. The highlights of his travels for his career were visiting Pompei, Italy and Tromso, Norway. He loved visiting Norway and was in the process of learning Norwegian that he diligently practiced each day.
Gary retired from the Navy in 1998 and started a second career as an owner operator over the road truck driver. He met Bridget the day after Thanksgiving, 2001 after she expressed an interest in learning to drive a truck to “see the country” to a mutual friend. The friend helped them connect and suggested Bridget ride along with Gary to see how she liked the lifestyle before committing to truck driver training school. It must have been love at first sight, they came home three weeks later to be married in Maggie Valley, NC on December 22, 2001.
Gary and Bridget team drove over the road for several years and had many great adventures along the way. Taking a break from driving when they were in interesting places in WA, CA, NV, CO, NM, and AZ, often parking the truck and trailer and renting a car to see the sights. Favorite memories they shared were driving up the California coast on Hwy 101 for two weeks and Gary surprising Bridget by going to the Kentucky Derby on Bridget’s birthday one year.
After several years of driving together, making wonderful memories together and visiting every state in the contiguous US, they sold the truck and found a new passion in fixing up vintage travel trailers and old houses. They shared a love for old things and working to bring new life to them. They made their homes in Thomas, OK and Ontonagon, (Upper Peninsula), MI before finding their “forever hometown” and buying and moving into the Rudolph house in Wimbledon, ND in 2022. A phrase they often repeated to one another while on their many travels was “Home is where my sweetheart is”. Now Gary has gone on ahead of Bridget to make his home in Heaven and will be terribly missed by all who dearly loved him.
