At random: The United States submarine USS TRITON was fitted with twin reactors and was considered the longest submarine ever built until the advent of the OHIO class. The TRITON was designed for a surface displacement of 5,900 tons. Large submarines of other countries have been the Japanese I-400 (5,220 tons), and the French SURCOUF (2,880 tons).

Subject: Why Submarines?...will tell ya...

I first saw my first submarine when I was 10 yrs old. We went to Mobile, Al every year to visit family. They have the USS Alabama BB?? and a few years later they added the USS Drum SS??. When I went aboard the Drum...I was in awe. although she was small and cramped (compaired to todays boats) I wanted to go to sea onboard a submarine. I got my wish when I joined the Navy in 1978 and got my first boat...USS Ray (SSN-653) I spent 3 years on her...I was not part of the crunch crew, but joined her when she was in the yard getting repaired. I made 2 Northern runs and 1 Med run aboard her. Now she no longer with us, decom'ed and scraped.

USS Ray (SSN-653) will always be a special memory...
