At random: Insignia of the Navy's submarine service is a submarine flanked by two dolphins. Dolphins, or porpoises, the traditional attendants to Poseidon, Greek God of the Sea and patron deity of sailors, are symbolic of a calm sea, and are sometimes called the 'sailors' friend. In addition to the Dolphins, those World War II submariners who participated in successful combat patrols may wear the coveted Submarine Combat Insignia.

I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

WHITE .. .. .. FULTON – September 4, 2026, Frederick R. White, Jr., 79, of Fulton passed away Friday, September 4, 2026. He was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey on June 6, 1947 to Anna Kozlowski White and Frederick R. White, Sr. Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy and travelled around the world as part of the Navy’s nuclear-powered submarine program. He proudly served until his retirement as a Master Chief in 1987. Upon his retirement from the Navy, Fred and his wife, Sandy settled in Fulton in 1989. Fred was employed for several years as a training officer at the Niagara Mohawk Power Plant in Scriba. Fred was a proud member of the CNYSUBVETS and remained active in his community. Above all, Fred cherished his family and never missed one of his sons or grandsons sporting events and was always there to cheer them on. His love, support, and dedication to his family will be deeply missed and forever be remembered.
He is survived by his sons, Frederick (Martha) White, III of Oswego and Joseph White of Fulton; his brother David (Colleen) White of Florida; his sister, Cynthia Iversen of Colorado; his grandsons, Trey, Freddy, Owen and Alex; his nephew, Ken Iverson and his niece, Allie Iversen. In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Sandra White.

ROBERTS .. .. .. Darrel Lee Roberts. Born: May 29, 1940 in Streator, IL. Died: September 5, 2026 in Bloomington, IL
Darrel Lee Roberts, age 86 of Streator passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 5, 2026. A private family only service will be held at the Winterrowd Funeral Home, followed by full Military Honors and burial in Nigh Chapel Cemetery, Graymont, IL. Joe York will serve as urn-bearer.
Darrel was born on May 29, 1940, to Levi and Hazel (Elmore) Roberts in Streator. He was one of five children – brothers Max, Denis, Dale, and a sister Chelsea (Taylor), all of whom are deceased. He attended Grant Elementary School and graduated from Streator High School in 1958.
After high school Darrel began working at Thatcher Glass Factory. He left the factory in 1961 to join the United States Navy where he proudly served as Engineman Second Class aboard the submarine USS Sea Fox 402 during the Vietnam War. His military service was complete in 1964 at which time
he returned home and returned to work at the glass factory having retained his seniority there. He continued working as Thatcher Glass transitioned over the years with various co-owners until it was unfortunately closed for good. Following 35 years at the glass factory he accepted a position in the maintenance department at Illinois Valley Community College where he worked until retirement in 2011.
He was a certified electrician and certified in HVAC service/repair which he did on the side for many years. Darrel enjoyed hunting, fishing and turtle hunting, he looked forward every year to attending the Thresherman's Reunion in Pontiac and he liked the occasional 7 and 7 drink. Back in the day, he liked attending annual family reunions to catch up with relatives. In his later years he enjoyed making birdhouses, helping his wife in the garden, playing cards, reminiscing about times gone by and basic fiddling around in his garage. He always liked watching history, mystery and western shows on television. All the squirrels in the neighborhood knew to go to his home where he threw out peanuts and watched them in the yard every day. He was a member of VFW post 1492. He was a fan of the older era of country music and was a die-hard Ford guy who loved to joke around with people who owned a Chevy.
Darrel met Rebecca York while working at the glass factory, and they were married on October 5, 1989 She survives. Together they enjoyed traveling all across the U.S. visiting several popular tourist destinations and historic places. He desired to travel to every state, and throughout his lifetime he was able to visit 47 of the 50.
He was preceded in death by his parents, all four siblings and two grandsons - Matthew Halko and C.J. York.
He is survived by his children Melody (Rob) Pearson of Streator, Linda (Tony) Halko of Streator, Gene (Sharon) Roberts of Streator, David Roberts of Streator, Glenda Rush of Byron, Joe (Jamie) York of Lacon, Sam (Tabby) York of Streator, Becky Centko of Streator. Surviving also are several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Darrel was a very kind soul. He was humble, generous, and always willing to help out others. He always had a positive attitude and could find the bright side of any situation. He will be dearly remembered and greatly missed.

ROSS .. .. .. Kenneth Joseph Ross, 82, of Lakeport died in hospital in San Francisco on Sunday, October 19, 2008. Ken was born in Kelseyville, on May 26, 1926 to Joseph Joaquin Ross and Anna Santos Ross. He grew up on the Ross ranch outside of Finley with his four younger sisters. In 1961 he met his future wife, Alva, a young registered nurse from Illinois. They married and had three children who were also reared in Lake County. He was an alumnus of Clear Lake High School and Santa Rosa Junior College. Ken enlisted in the U.S. Navy at a young age, made the military his career, and served during World War II and the Korean War. He served on the USS Randall APA-224 and the USS Scamp SSN-588, a nuclear submarine. After naval service, Ken returned to Lake County and worked as a peace officer for over sixteen years in the Lake County Sheriff’s Department where he was affectionately known as “Doc”. Ken loved to laugh and was known for his wonderful sense of humor. He was an outdoorsman all of his life and greatly enjoyed fresh and salt water fishing, hunting, camping and golfing. A voracious reader, he had a fondness for spy novels, Native American history and military history. Ken was also an avid gardener and an accomplished chef. He is survived by Alva Ross of Lakeport; their three children, Jacquelyn, Maria and Joseph Ross; and his step-daughter, Debra Burak. He is also survived by sisters Leona Newman, Lois Thorne, Joanne Campbell and Judy Davidson. The family is deeply appreciative of the many friendships and kindnesses that sustained Ken over a long life well-lived.

LYONS .. .. .. Thomas Andrew Lyons died with family by his side on September 4, 2026, at Woodridge Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Berlin, Vt. He was 89 years old.
He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Hamilton Lyons, in 1985. He is survived by his children, Thomas of South Burlington, Vt.; Andrew and wife April Uzarski of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and Sarah and husband Raymond Lewis of Walden, Vt.; and by his grandchildren, Audrey Lewis and Thomas and Claire Lyons.
He was born in Richmond, Ind., on November 24, 1936. He grew up in Indianapolis and St. Petersburg, Fla., and graduated from Hebron Academy in Maine. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1958, where he served on diesel-powered submarines. After the Navy, he worked as a phone man in New York City and then as a repairman for Xerox, which brought him to Brandon, Vt. in 1967 with his young family. He built a legendary, seasonal sugaring arch, tapped the massive Park Street sugar maples, and made friends up and down the street. And yes, contrary to what he said to the police that night, he did light off those fireworks.
On a yearlong sabbatical from Xerox, he founded Tap Water, a nonprofit service organization that brought indoor plumbing to Vermonters who did not otherwise have access to running water. This work inspired a career shift that led to decades of design-build work in Vermont and Maine and many very cool projects.
He enjoyed sailing on Lake Champlain and made several voyages, involving many port calls and crew changes, up the coast to Maine and down the intracoastal waterways to Florida on his wooden boat, Prudence. He also inspired many memorable motorcycle trips with friends and family. Among his many gifts were his kindness, his insight and curiosity, and his infectious good nature. Tom was a master storyteller, and he effortlessly brought laughter and goodness to others. He had a million-dollar smile and a greatness that endures.

SKARE .. .. .. Roger William Skare, 90, of St. Michael, Minnesota passed away Friday, August 21, 2026. He was born on February 15, 1936 in Swift Falls, Minnesota the son of Theodore John Skare Sr. and Eloise Lillian (Fearon) Skare.
Roger attended grade school in Swift Falls and high school in Benson, Minnesota.  After graduation, he attended St. Cloud Tech for one year and Concordia College in Moorhead for half a year.   After leaving Concordia, he joined The United States Navy.   He graduated from electrical & submarine school.   He was assigned to The United States Submarine #418 in Key West, Florida.   Later the submarine was transferred to Charleston, South Carolina.   It is there where he met Wilma “Jean” Billingsley. November 30, 1959, Roger W. Skare and Wilma “Jean” Billingsley were joined in marriage.  They were happily married for 66 years.
After Roger was discharged from The United States Navy, they moved to Minnesota for about a year and then onto Winter Haven, Florida. In Florida, Roger managed an Ace Hardware Store. Jean worked as a cashier and salesperson in Thom McAn Shoe Store.   When they returned to Minnesota, Roger went to work as a purchase agent for an Independent Millwork, a wholesaler to LRR Yards in Minnesota.   Jean worked at a couple of Golf Pro Shops at a couple of different courses in the area Shortly after moving to St. Michael, they joined the golf course called Fox Hollow and were charter members there for 30 years. After their retirement in 1999, they became snow birds and spent three months each winter in Florida playing golf.
Roger is survived by a sister: Carol (Carlyle) Boettcher of Apple Valley; a brother: Terry (Carol) Skare of Princeton; He will be missed by many nieces, nephews and good friends.
