At random: The United States submarine USS TRITON was fitted with twin reactors and was considered the longest submarine ever built until the advent of the OHIO class. The TRITON was designed for a surface displacement of 5,900 tons. Large submarines of other countries have been the Japanese I-400 (5,220 tons), and the French SURCOUF (2,880 tons).

I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

CANTRAL .. .. .. Gary Neil Cantral, 88, of Idaho Falls, passed away September 2, 2026, at Lincoln Court Retirement Community. He was under the care of Oakstone Home Health and Hospice and his loving family. Gary was born March 2, 1938, in Rexburg, Idaho, to Neil Brooks Cantral and Esther Wyman Cantral. He grew up in Teton and attended schools in Newdale. In 1947, his family moved to Idaho Falls where he graduated from Bonneville High School. He also attended the Idaho State Post Academy and the FBI National Academy. Gary served in the United States Navy aboard a submarine, the USS Bang, and a destroyer, the USS Rowan. On November 14, 1959, he married Jane Bickford in Saco, Maine. Gary and Jane made their home in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where Gary worked as a Bonneville County Deputy Sheriff. Jane passed away on February 4, 2021. He later married Patti Eisenbrandt Schroeder in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She passed away May 1, 2025. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting, and playing pinochle and bingo. He loved his home in Swan Valley. He disassembled, moved, and reconstructed a historic barn featured in the “Historic Barns of Bonneville County”. Gary is survived by his son, William (Chiyo) Cantral of Yakima, WA; son, Daniel (Michelle) Cantral of Hoquiam, WA; son, Charles Cantral of Albany, OR; sister, Lois Butikofer of Idaho Falls, ID; sister, Carol (Russ) Spain of Iona, ID; 3 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Phyllis Stanger; former spouse, Jane Cantral; and wife, Patti Cantral.

KELLEHER .. .. .. Richard “Richie” Edmund Kelleher, a longtime resident of Bloomingburg, NY, and Bluffton, SC, died peacefully at home in East Quogue, NY, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. He was 81 years old. The son of the late William Kelleher and Antionette Fitzpatrick Kelleher, Richard was born on August 4, 1945, in Brooklyn, NY.Richard served in the U.S. Navy aboard submarines and earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Iona College. He spent nearly 40 years working on Wall Street at Brown Brothers Harriman, where he concluded his career as a Senior Vice President in Audit. He also shared his knowledge and experience as an adjunct professor of business at Orange County Community College. He was quick with a quip, followed the stock market with fervor, possessed an unparalleled work ethic and had an unshakeable moral fiber. He was an avid golfer and a passionate Yankees and New York Giants fan. His faith was a steady part of his life, reflected in the simple tradition of Sunday mornings at church and in the way he carried himself—with strength, humility, and purpose. Above all else, Richard had a fierce love and devotion for his family and friends. To those who knew and loved him, his greatest legacy will be the kindness he showed so naturally, the unwavering loyalty he gave so freely, and the goodness he brought into the lives of those around him. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Mary, and their dog, Marley; his children, Regina and her husband, Kevin Vander Schaaf, of East Quogue, NY; Jacquie and her husband, Kirby Pulver, of Brooklyn, NY; Richard and his wife, Laura, of Summit, NJ; Timothy and his wife, Kristin, of Brooklyn, NY; and Siobhan and her husband, Marty Smith, of Maplewood, NJ. He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Lily, Marin, & Gavin Vander Schaaf; Una Lou Pulver; and Harrison & Oliver Kelleher; and his two siblings, Carol Quinn, of Phoenix, Arizona, and Bill and his wife Joanne, of Syracuse, NY. He was predeceased by his brother, Michael, and his sister, Barbara.

KERSTIENS .. .. .. Francis Lyle Kerstiens. If you are reading this, then you know that the soul of Lyle has departed this world for the next. Lyle was born December 7, 1950, in Colorado Springs and grew up in Simla, Colorado. His soul departed on August 28, 2026, at the age of 75. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Marjorie Kerstiens; daughter Erica Kerstiens; and stepson Jonathan Garcia. He is survived by his beloved wife, Teresa; his son, Eron Kerstiens (Teri) of Los Alamos, NM; his stepdaughter, Jennifer Garcia (Lorenzo) of Rio Rancho, NM; sister Verna Gross (John) of Durango, CO; grandchildren Caleb Kerstiens, Jace Kerstiens, Anna Kerstiens, Kylee Elwell, Gavin Elwell, and Ashlyn Garcia; great-grandson Sebastian Garcia; and his very loyal dog, Ruby.
Lyle joined the Navy in 1971 and served on the USS James Monroe, SSBN 622, as a submarine reactor operator until 1978. He was extremely proud of earning his Dolphins, signifying “Qualified in Submarines” status, and loved telling sea stories. He belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and United States Submarine Veterans. He didn’t have a PhD, but he did have a DD-214. This nuclear background provided the experience to get hired at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, later known as Los Alamos National Laboratory. His LANL background included accelerator operations; quality assurance on plutonium reactor fuel processes, fusion reactor tritium fuel recovery, and high-level nuclear waste storage; I&C engineering on nuclear weapons underground testing; I&C engineering on high-explosive testing; computer and network management; facility software management; and the development and delivery of Conduct of Engineering training. While working full-time, he managed to finish a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Mexico and a Master of Arts in Organizational Management through the University of Phoenix. He was very proud of working at LANL and retired after 34 years. He continued to provide Conduct of Operations contract work for eight years when Teresa needed him to work with his own kind. He liked any outdoor activity, including yard work. He took his children camping and backpacking in New Mexico and Colorado, where he and Eron managed to climb 34 of the 53 Colorado 14ers. He loved running mountains and canyons with his dogs, which morphed into marathons and triathlons, as well as skiing and snowshoeing. He designed and made much of his and Teresa’s furniture. Later in life, as his body parts wore out, he started playing bad golf. He loved life and will be missed by all who crossed paths with him. He always worked to turn bad decisions into good ones and to repeat good decisions.

GABOARDI .. .. .. Ronald Anthony Gaboardi, 89, of Bethel, beloved husband of Eleanor Gaboardi, passed away on September 4, 2026, at Saint John Paul II Center after a brief illness. Born in Danbury, Connecticut on June 2, 1937, to the late Esther (Oviatt) and Anthony Gaboardi.
Ronnie was always talking about growing up in the Osborne St/Locust Ave neighborhood. He was a proud member of the Danbury High School class of '55, often referring to his yearbook in memory of classmates as they passed away. He was a member of the marching band, playing the clarinet. He had a love of music, especially Artie Shaw and Big Band music. He often played along on his clarinet while enjoying the tunes. He worked in the Danbury Hatting industry while in school. After graduation, he was briefly enrolled at Danbury Teacher's College until he enlisted in the US Navy. He served on the USS Tusk Submarine #426 based out of Groton, CT. He worked in electronics manufacturing at Data Control Systems & Consolidated Controls-Eaton Corporation until his retirement. He partnered in owning his own electronics business.
Throughout his life, he was involved in many sporting activities. As a youngster, he played in a basketball game at Madison Square Garden. He played in basketball and flag football leagues. He was a long-time member of the Danbury Industrial Softball league, at one point being the oldest player. He loved the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Tigers. He was a lifelong member of the Candlewood Sportsmen's Club which was founded by his father and uncles, regularly taking trips to "the farmhouse" where he enjoyed all that nature had to offer. He loved fishing on the sound with his father. He especially loved ice fishing.
True to his Italian heritage, he always had a garden, growing vegetables and flowers. He started plants from seeds and tended to them until they fruited. He was known to sneak a tomato plant to his neighbor's doorsteps. At the height of his gardening, he and Ellie would can tomatoes to enjoy over the entire year. Always a good neighbor, he would take care of the snow for his elderly neighbors. He was like a magnet to kids and animals.
Most of all, even up until the very end, Ronnie had a gift for bringing laughter wherever he went with his impeccably quick wit. Some of our most treasured memories are of getting into a little trouble alongside him while playing a joke on someone else or watching one of his playful schemes unfold perfectly.
Besides his loving wife with whom he celebrated 70 years of marriage on May 26th, Ronald is survived by his daughters; Laurie Gaboardi, Linda Gaboardi, Kathleen Gaboardi, Angela Gaboardi Schaedler, Nancy Gaboardi and her partner Joseph Lamparelli. He is survived by his dear cousin Christopher Gaboardi (Heidi). His Nephews and Niece, James Main, Andrew Chark & Sandeigh (Chark) Hutchinson and many other members of his extended family.

CUNNINGHAM .. .. .. James A. Cunningham passed away peacefully on September 7, 2026, surrounded by his family in a room full of love in Annapolis Maryland. Following graduation, he began his career with NSA while attending college and awaiting active-duty orders Submarine Training School in New London CT. With draft notice in hand, He paused both his civil service career and college classwork while he reported for active duty in Norfolk, Virginia, assigned to the USN submarine Sea Leopard. Following his active-duty tour, Jim reported back to his position with NSA and completed his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland. Jim served in the Navy reserve simultaneously working for the department of defense and building his long-term career, serving our country, both military, and in civil roles. While he had many interesting projects and assignments during his NSA career, he was always proud of his military service and the time he spent building and maintaining relationships with the people he met while in the service. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James Cunningham and Marjorie "Betty" Cunningham, his baby brother Harry Cunningham, and his recently departed beloved sister-in-law Joyce Cunningham Jim is survived by his high school sweetheart, Linda Frailer Cunningham, whom he married in September 1966. They were just two weeks shy of celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. He is also survived by a daughter Kelley Cunningham Stefancik, (John) and a son Michael Cunningham (Samantha). He had enormous pride and love for all of his family but especially for his grandchildren Jackson Stefancik, Alexandra Stefancik, Kate Stefancik, Elizabeth Cunningham, and Elise Cunningham. All came to surround him with love and prayers in his final hours Jim is also survived by brothers Joseph Cunningham (Dianne), John Cunningham, and Patrick Cunningham (Jo Ann) and many nieces, nephews, and grandnephews joined in the vigil as well. So many other family members and friends offered their love and prayers during this difficult time, and we know he could feel the love for him, and he will look out for each of us in his new role.
