I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

DeLONG .. .. .. Charles Walter DeLong Jr (Chuck), passed away peacefully at Salem Hospital on Friday, August 28th, 2026, at the age of 83 after a relapse of AML. He was born the oldest child to Charles W. L. and Marie G. DeLong in Allentown, PA.
Chuck joined the U.S. Navy in 1963 and served proudly for 6 years as an Electrician’s Mate 1st Class, his last assignment being aboard the submarine USS Atule (SS 403). After his military service, he attended college at SOSC and became a CPA. Chuck was an avid U of O Duck fan and enjoyed his free time riding his Harley Davidson. He and Lois enjoyed traveling and being “snowbirds” in Indio, CA.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Charles W. L. DeLong Sr and Marie G. DeLong, brother-in-law William J Hutter and his daughter Jeneva C Watson Rose. Chuck is survived by his wife of 35 years, Lois and his children with first wife Susan, Christine M Eickhorst (Kurt) and Charles W DeLong III (Teresa) and by sister Linda A Hutter (William). He was blessed with three grandsons, nine granddaughters and four great grandchildren.

RUSSACK .. .. .. The family of Barry B. Russack is saddened, with heavy hearts, to announce his passing peacefully in hospice care on August 15, 2026 at the age of 82. We are grateful to Hartford Healthcare and their hospice team for their kindness and deep empathetic care. Extended gratitude to Pendleton Rehabilitation and Nursing Care for their dedicated multidisciplinary team who provided respectful, compassionate care for Barry.
Barry B. Russack, was born July 5th, 1944 to father Phil Russack and mother Mollie Grouppe. Barry was raised from age 4 to 16, with twin brother Paul Russack, in the JCCA Jewish Childcare Association located in Pleasantville, NY. He then joined the United States Navy andproudly served from 1961 to 1990. Barry B. Russack, TMCM(SS) rose through the ranks while in the Navy and retired from TMCMSS, Torpedoman Command Master Chief Submarine Service.
“ The Master Chief, or COB”, was stationed on many submarines and completed 29 patrols total in his career. The boats included: USS Ling SS 297, USS tecumseh SSBN628, USS James Madison SSBN 627, USS Andrew Jackson SSNBN 619, USS Ulysses S. Grant SSBN 631, USS Will Rogers SSBN659, USS Kamehameha SSBN642, USS West Virginia SSBN736, USS Fulton AS11. Barry received 2 special honors. Barry was a Holland Award recipient. Barry was qualified in submarines for 50 consecutive years. Barry was also given the Connecticut Veteran Wartime Service Medal for selfless service during a time of war. Barry enjoyed traveling the world.His favorite ports were, Edinburgh, Scotland and Rota, Spain. Having been stationed in many duty stations up and down the east coast being on Boomers as a COB, Barry ultimately settled in Groton, Ct. to raise his family.
While serving in the military he received his bachelor's in Human resources and a master's degree from the University of New Haven In industrial organizational psychology. After retiring from the military, Barry went on to work a second career as a psychiatric social worker. By coming full circle in his life and being raised in an orphanage, “Taking care of others and giving back is what we do”. Barry worked at the Hartford dispensary methadone clinic, First Step Inc and OIC. In semi-retirement at age 70 he was a substitute Counselor at Norwich Technical School.
After retirement from social services, Barry continued to volunteer and give back for Veteran Coffeehouses with TVCCA in the community with his beloved therapy dog, Rosie who volunteered with him for the last 12 years up until this year. Barry and Rosie were well known for providing service and care as Veterans met to support one another. Barry is survived by his daughter, Dr. Leah Russack-Baker, her husband Joe Russack-Baker, and their son Jonathan Russack-Baker. In addition, daughter Bari, her husband Dan and grandchildren Jazelle, Myiah, Quinton, and Jaxon. Nieces, Dawn Cuccio, Lori Ellen Brock, E7 Sergeant First Class retired Army, Meryl Hokkanson, retired Government service GS13. Nephew Paul JosephRussack.
Barry’s love of his life, Pat Valenza Russack, married 53 years “ preceded in death” on March 30, 2020. In addition, preceded in death are his twin brother Paul Russack, and his older sister Sheila Neyman.
Barry will be remembered for being a volunteer paramedic for Groton Ambulance, Range officer at Quaker Hill Rod and gun club, Special Olympic volunteer, girl scout Dad, and Pat’s “equipment manager” when she trained for marathons. Barry is beloved for being a special Dad,Rosies’s Dad, Pa to his grandchildren and a beloved member of the military community. Special thanks to all the Military community members who contributed to the village of support and were a part of Barry’s “ Military Family”. Gratitude to Norma Walters, special friend/family, “3rd daughter” to Barry, and now Rosie’s mom, for your dedication and efforts to make sure Rosie was and is loved going forward.
