At random: "I don't know why we have to be down here on this hold down exercise(at the 60th hour). Hell, I went through this on the Thresher (SS 200) during WW ll with a Nip Sea Going Tug hooked onto our screw guards, trying to lift our butts out of the water. They didn't get us then, and these Tin Cans (ours) ain't going to get us now." -- "Hambone" Hamilton SD1 (SS). "Hambone" made 13 war patrols on USS Remora, SS-487, uttered these words in July 1957 during a hold down exercise off Kobe Japan. |

We are so fortunate to live in such a great country and see that there are communities, who support our Military personnel with such regard. As we celebrate our freedom, this reinforces the point that our freedom doesn't come free nor without tremendous sacrifice. Killed in action the week before, the body of Staff Sergeant First Class John C. Beale was returned to Falcon Field in Peachtree City, Georgia, just south of Atlanta, on June 11, 2009. The Henry County Police Department escorted the procession to the funeral home in McDonough, Georgia. A simple notice in local papers indicated the road route to be taken and the approximate time. Nowadays one can be led to believe that America no longer respects honor and no longer honors sacrifice outside the military. Be it known that there are many places in this land where people still recognize the courage and impact of total self-sacrifice. Georgia remains one of those graceful places. The link below is a short travelogue of that day's remarkable and painful journey. http://blip.tv/play/AYGJ5h6YgmE cobber...

Thank you Cobber for that tribute, that is one of the finest that I have ever seen for one of our fallen soldiers. His rank was reported as Staff Sergeant (E-6/SSG) and on the billboard as Sergeant First Class (E-7/SFC). It was truly amazing to see the turn out of people wanting to pay their respects to him and his family. RIP SFC John Beale, we have the watch SSG Darrin Singer OIF 1 Vet

It really restores your faith in the American public. I thought that nobody really cared... while our boys are fighting and dying everybody else is at the mall. Not so in Georgia. The streets are closed and thousands line the streets with thier hands over thier heart and carring a large American flag. I tried to mentaly place myself in one of the cars with his family and thought how they must have felt seeing all those people showing thier respects. INCREDIBLE is the only word that comes close to describle this event. Go with God, SSgt John C. Beale. Steamboat sends

I know a lot of people in this land have become jaded by the rhetoric about this war, and the images of the fallen, but it's heartening to know there are still places in this great land where time is taken to properly honor those who gave all. Rest in Peace, SGT Beale.

It's good that so many people appreciate the cost of freedom paid by our young men and their families. Truly a wonderful tribute. As the song said, Proud to be an American. I wish I could have been there. RIP, Sergeant First Class John C. Beale Coyote
