At random: Nautilus has long been a popular name for a submarine. Some of the more famous of these are Robert Fulton's NAUTILUS (1800), Jules Verne's fictional Nautilus, and the NAUTILUS of Sir Hubert Wilkins in which he attempted a voyage to the North Pole under the ice (1931). There have also been three U.S. submarines of that name, including the world's first nuclear powered submarine built by the Electric Boat Division.

I've been reading up on current boat technology and the stampede of nations into submarines. The future is going to be very interesting when you can't go to sea without bumping into a thousand new nukes, AIPs and used boats. Touring current new US boats, meetings with the USSVI, and attending lectures at Naval Submarine League meetings has put the fear of God in me. Why in the living Hell are we cutting back when we should be flooding the seas with our fleet?

Sharkey,

Typically the bottom line is ..... return for the money invested. Not that I agree, as I believe this is a "short term" view. And, when you are talking about maintaining a fleet which gives the US a multi-ocean dominance or even parity, it is a very expensive proposition.
