The last time I visited Sub base was at a USSVI anniversary and we went on board a Seawolf class boat for a walk through. I think it was SSN22. A chief was giving us an explanation of the torpedo tube layout but we got to discussing him having to change his badge from Torpedoman to a Machinist Mate badge. He wAS really pissed off about it and said he was gonna keep his badge until they force him to change it, then he was getting out/discharge.
My question is; does this change apply to the skimmer navy also?

As a TM!(SS), this is only my opinion. And my answer is an unqualified no to the question. When I was getting out there was talk of combining rates and both the TMs and MMs were not happy with it. The thought as told to me was that the TM rate had really diffused since the old days. In the old days of the MK 14 and MK 16 torpedoes the TM were more specilized tham MMs on the weapons. But lately with the MK 48 ( nothing to do) weapons the MMs could handle the job and it was sold as a cost cutting measure. You know one of those ideas conjurred up by some Rhode's boy looking for some geedunk for his chest. My answer as no to the question is that the surface TMs are way far afield from a surface MM. To be really consistent with combining rates of surface craft they would have to bring back the GM (gunner's mate) rate and combine them. Then there goes the Rhodes Scollar's idea and his participation trophy. PS, as an aside, at the time on the boomers there was talk of combining the MMs with the missile man rating. |

That bit about combining the MTs with MMs might have happened but way after I got out. I believe what happens is there's a lot of Admirals being promoted. Maybe too many. They have to justify their existence and promotions. So to me it's just busy work. Make some Uniform changes, tell the rag hats how to wear the dixie cup, combine rates, etc. |
