He was born in Canton, IL to Louis and Ruth (Fordyce) Mulligan on December 9, 1926. He married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Jean Haughawout on November 25, 1945, in Canton, IL. She preceded him in death on October 9, 2015. Fred's life reads like a fictional novel. He grew up during the Great Depression and spent his early years in a horse drawn wagon zig zagging around the Midwest to dodge the Pinkerton's. Fred left high school to join the Navy. At the time, he was not of age, so he lied and went on to fight in WWII. He patrolled the South Pacific while serving aboard the submarine USS Cod (SS-224) from August 28, 1945, to January 5, 1946. He was the last surviving crewmember who served on this vessel during WWII. After the war, Fred returned home to Canton, IL and married his high school sweetheart, Shirley. Together for over 70 years, they raised six children, including a child with special needs, whose side he never left for over 60 years. Fred lived many lives. While attending WIU they had a dance studio and donut shop, where dad befriended civil rights leader C.T. Vivian. Fred became a farmer until their house burnt down, he rebuilt the Orndorf, survived tornados and floods all while serving his community as a teacher, coach, bus driver and principal. After he moved his family to Colorado, he became an entrepreneur. He owned restaurants, real estate and a Bed & Breakfast. Eventually, he returned to his roots as a farmer back in Canton, IL where he remained until his death. As a Christian, retired educator and coach he had a positive effect on thousands of lives. Fred was best known for his omnipresent smile, optimistic outlook on life and willingness to help others. In addition to his wife, preceding him in death is one of his three daughters, Shauna Mulligan, his five brothers, Chuck, Earl Robert, Louis, Tom, Virgil, and his one sister, Mildred Simmons as well as his parents. Fred leaves behind a large family legacy. Surviving him are his children Kathy (Doug) Nafziger, Stephen Mulligan, Patrick (Margaret) Mulligan, Sean Mulligan, and Erin (Ed) Welcome; thirteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and three sisters, Nelda (Lloyd) Wages; Donna (Nelson) Maxwell; Peggy (Mike) McCreight. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on Monday, November 1, 2021, at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, at Evangelical Free Church in Canton, IL. Pastor Brandon Theobald will officiate. Burial will take place in Orendroff – Breeds Cemetery in rural Canton, where Military honors will be conducted by the United States Navy and the Canton VFW. Jr., 79, of Ledyard, CT sailed on to his Heavenly Father's Kingdom unexpectedly Oct. 27, 2021. Fred journeyed from his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio, to the U.S. Naval Base in Groton, to grace the submarine world with his gifts and talents as an electronics technician, always calm and alert. He became a "plank-owner" aboard the USS Sturgeon (SSN-637), a stealth boat, first of the 637 Class. In his undersea adventures with his fellow crewmembers, he shared the experience of navigating beneath the North Pole. Fred reveled in all the joys of outdoor life and nature, especially sailing and fishing, with family gathered around him. His proficiency in electronics technology led him to several careers, where he contributed his expertise to General Dynamics/Electric Boat, Unisys and, in retirement, Foxwoods Casino. His daily computer correspondence with friends, family and colleagues, along with assisting with computer repairs, provided him opportunity to pursue that favorite pastime. He was a dedicated, kind and loyal person of few words, with deep wells of wisdom, which he drew upon and shared throughout his life when needed, especially during these days of disturbing unrest. Fred modeled the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," throughout his life, ever-present in his quiet strength. Fred leaves his wife, a native of Old Lyme, Beverly Ann Barlow Davies. They were married in 1970, and made their lakeside home in Ledyard, sharing 51 years of partnership. Fred is also survived by their son Frederick W. Davies III, and his partner Erica Brodeur, of Plainfield; two grandchildren of the Mashantucket Pequot Nation, Frederick M. Davies, Ledyard, and Breanna Ward, and her husband, Jeff of Maysville, N.C.; and five great-grandchildren. In addition, he leaves behind his Ohio and Connecticut families: sisters, Sally Davies Jones and her husband, Jim of Poland, and Sue Davies Maloney of Youngstown; and brother Jim Davies of Chandler, Ariz.; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Barlow Cerruti, Ivoryton, Helen Barlow Slocum, Holland, N.Y., and the Rev. Nina Barlow Schmid, South Windsor; and brother-in-law Joseph L. Barlow Jr. and his wife Linda of Old Saybrook. Family and friends are invited to gather at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Duck River Cemetery, Old Lyme, for a graveside celebration of Fred's loving life. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Wounded Warriors Foundation are welcome. For further information or to leave a remembrance, go to: www.fultontherouxoldlyme.com. I ran into many guys from all the boats there. I had several tours of Sturgeon while I was there. We were commissioned and left in Aug '66 and Sturgeon didn't commission until March '67. Next time I saw anything to do with her she had been decommissioned and her sail removed and place at the Keyport Museum outside of Bangor, Wa. | ||
