At random: USS R-6 was fitted the first prototype US submarine snorkel at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the closing months of the European part of WW II in April / May 1945 and successfully tested it off Fort Lauderdale, Fl. as the war against Japan ended in August 1945. The snorkel was removed from the USS R-6 and she was decommissioned and scrapped in September 1945.

What I find interesting is how these officers get promoted, assume command, and then the Navy discovers a problem.

Tom, there is a possibility, maybe even probability in some cases that there wasn't a problem with the CO. Maybe there was a problem with an asinine squadron commander, and the ship CO told him to pack sand, or resisted in the interest of his crew. I seen that once.

Ian, that's a hoped for conclusion I never considered...

I was talking with my Brother-in-Law whose Grandson is in his 1st year at Annapolis. He was admitted under an athletic scholarship. His grades weren't good enough for that to have him admitted. His major is History. I guess I'm just an old fart but how does all that translate into a leader. whom I thought, was learning to be a leader if in a combat or crisis event. Maybe that's a reason why COs are being removed.

I won't comment regarding the athletic scholarship, but it has been my experience that high grades do not necessarily make a good leader, or even a good employee.

Absolutely.  I had it made at my last company, the other two hiring managers only hired based on grades.  I had one applicant that had just above a C average in school.  She was working full time while going to school.

When I talked to her current employer he confided in me that he hoped I wouldn't hire her.  He owned this small locksmith shop, and he knew that when she graduated from college it was inevitable that she'd move on, however he dreaded replacing her.

We hired her, and it turned out great.  She was an incredible asset to our company.  Unfortunately for us she got married, and her husband got transferred as a jet mechanic necessitating a move to Charlotte.  She was the best hire I ever made.

I had not thought of the probability that it was a CO sticking up for the crew.

I once worked with a guy who's purpose in life seemed to be to put as many sheepskins on the wall as he could.  I'm not sure he could change a tire on his car if he needed to!

Don,
That was especially true during Vietnam.  Going to school and carrying a full load kept you from being drafted and becoming another 'army grunt' getting shot at in a Vietnam rice paddy.
